EMCO Controls A/S has delivered 15 pcs. Venturi flow meters for LKAB in Kiruna, Sweden. The largest of them has a nominal diameter of 4.1 m and are measuring up to 700.000 Nm3/h.

At the end of 2007 a consignment of 15 venturi flow meters, the largest being more than
4 meters in diameter was delivered by EMCO Controls A/S to the Swedish ore company LKAB in Kiruna in the northern part of Sweden for their new KK4 pellet works.
Chosen on recommendation
- The order, which amounts to a pretty large amount, is so far the largest in the history of the company. The order came in house on recommendation by one of our Swedish customers. We are very proud that LKAB chose us to design and carry out these very large flow meters, says CEO Henrik Lisberg, EMCO Controls A/S.
30 million tonnes of ore per year
LKAB breaks currently approximately 24 million tonnes of iron ore a year in iron ore mines in Kiruna, but will over the years to come reach a production of approximately 30 million tons per year. Therefore, LKAB has to extend the facilities for dealing with the ore before it is sent to the railroad for shipping to Narvik. In connection with the treatment in the new pellet works they use large quantities of air and different gases and it is for this part of the plant, the large venturi flowmeters from EMCO Controls are now being used.
Flow Measurement in giant format
In all, EMCO Controls delivered 15 pcs. flowmeters with various inlets sections with flow profile conditioner and protective caps. The largest flow meters have a nominal diameter of 4.1 m, is approximately 17 meter long and a weight of 18 tonnes. They are designed for an airflow of 700,000 Nm3 / h. The total length of venturi, inlet pipe and the protective cap is approximately 22 meters. The protective cap is fitted with baffles to avoid turbulence and to get a steady flow before the venturi tube.
The smallest flow meters have a nominal diameter of 600 mm. The whole structure is designed and the weight calculated in 3-D CAD program Autodesk Inventor.
By ship and truck.
The various components are manufactured in carbon steel and stainless steel and have been produced in Poland. Transport from Poland was made by ship to Luleå, Sweden and then with large trucks to Kiruna. The maximum size was 4.3 m, which not all parts could meet. Therefore, it was necessary to assemble the inlet cone and inlet pipe section of the venturi tube on site.
In less than one year
Installation of flow meters took place in October-November 2007 and shortly after the plant was successfully started up and then put into operation.
- LKAB have expressed satisfaction with both the manufacturing quality and the function of the venturis. Assembly, commissioning etc. went smoothly, and therefore, we are also a bit proud to have completed such a large project from ordering to complete installation, in less than one year, Henrik Lisberg ends.
The large venturis constitute a significant part of LKAB large treatment plant for iron ore in Kiruna.
Before shipment to Sweden the venturis were test mounted and approved on production site in Poland.
